Had this been any other mission, Tavo would have enjoyed the chance to hike through the wilderness with these two men. Their presence was comforting. Deke probably knew how to handle himself around non-predator shifters, and Jett, well he had times when he wasn’t a cocky bastard, but the three of them, it felt…good. Maybe he’d spent too much time with the herd, needed to get away like his mother had told him. Tried too hard to be his father’s second-in-command and live up to the legend that was Aristotle Redsand among the mustangs.

His father had built something, taken this harsh land, getting harsher with each passing year, and made a home for his herd, and for the other mustang shifters who decided to join them. He knew of a group in the middle of the country, the Mustang Ridge Shifters, and a couple others, but none as big nor as prosperous as the Redsand herd, which somehow managed to make it work and make the nearby town Bermejo a place shifters could call a home.

Tavo strode forward at a good, but not overly rushed pace. Jett stayed half a step ahead, as if he wanted to keep Tavo safe. Tavo let him. Should the lone wolves decide to attack, let the brawny panther take the first hit. He’d be more likely to withstand it.

Deke probably could hold his own in a fight, and he moved from being behind them to flanking Tavo. If he didn’t know any better, he’d think he was the leader with Jett and Deke as his bodyguards. The idea made him smile, because they’d be damn good at that job. Except he was the leader only because this was a Redsand sanctioned operation, and their lands were closest to the gorge and the free lands. He had no illusions. In a true fight, both shifters would take him easily.

A scent filled the air and he stopped. The musk of the lone wolves was close, but this wasn’t it. Instead, it was like a perfume designed to call to every sense in his body. If he had to describe it, he couldn’t except to say delicious.

“What?” Jett asked. A moment later his eyes widened, and he sniffed the air, before looking at Tavo. “That’s not lone wolf.”
